Jorge Vascano

Jorge Vascano

Born in 1982, Jorge "Vascano" Vasquez-Elescano spent his childhood north of his birthplace of Lima-Peru, in the jungle-like atmosphere of Tarapoto. This early exposure to exotic forms and the bold colors of his Amazon’s surroundings eventually became an ongoing inspirational source in his art making. Since his artistic formative years in his homeland, Jorge experimented with different disciplines allowing him to merge his practices and develop the foundations of that style that characterizes him.

Jorge continued to develop his skills in the arts and received formal training after he moved to the United States and enrolled at Northern Virginia Community College, where he got his Associate Degree in Fine Arts. Later on he went to Corcoran College of Art and Design, and then finished his undergraduate on 2015 at Maryland Institute College of Art. After, he move to New York in pursue of his graduate education, where in 2017 received his Master’s degree in Fine Art at the New York Academy of Art. During his studies, Jorge's works were displayed at exhibitions across educational institution’s campuses, participated in group shows, had his first solo show at the Peruvian consulate in Washington DC, was in international group shows and was awarded merit international residencies to Giverny, France and Carrara, Italy. Also he has been published in schools’ newspapers, literature journals, news articles, featured in selected web art portfolios and recently had his works featured in the motion picture If Beale Street Could Talk.

Jorge currently resides in the New York where he has upcoming shows and continues to build his professional portfolio.

Statement

This body of work is the evolution of my constant curiosity with the intangible complexities that make us human through the exploration of material. I’m fascinated with what lays under the surface of things and their elusive inner qualities that make them unique. Using material as a vehicle, I continuously search and rediscover my subjects in their depictions. However, I find a beautiful reciprocity in this pursuit, because in getting to know them I learn to know myself too. They in a way, help me to dive through my layers and find my own humanity reflected in theirs.
